How the bill is worked out.
Hosted storage
We measure each account's folder at each provider about four times a day, at varying times, and bill each day's largest measurement at that provider's price per GB-month (a GB is 10^9 bytes; each day is that month's share of a month). Old copies outside your plan's retention are deleted several times a day, so what you keep is what you pay for. Copies are compressed and encrypted before they leave the host.
Managed hosts
Each server is billed per started hour at its region's price, from the moment it's created until it's deleted, at most 25 hours a server. A server that never comes up isn't billed. Servers inside AWS also bill the data they send to storage per GB, except to hosted S3 in their own region; elsewhere transfer is included, except on the fallback cloud we use when our main one has no capacity ($0.03/GB).
Caps and stops
A card is required before anything hosted. When this month's projected charges reach your spending cap, new hosted copies and managed servers stop until next month or until you raise it; nothing already stored is deleted, and restore checks still read. An unpaid invoice stops them too.
Not billed
Hosts you run and storage you own, sources, plans, schedules, restore checks on your own hosts, and the website. Your own providers bill you for what they store and send, as they always do.
